DIAMOND KNOWLEDGE LOUNGE: CHAPTER 1

DIAMOND ANATOMY

A diamond's anatomy, or its basic structure, determines its proportions, brilliance, dispersion and scintillation. Each part of the diamond contributes to the diamond as a whole. Below is a brief description of the main components of a diamond.

01. Top Facet

The Table

The Table is the largest Facet located on the very top and centre of the diamond. The Table is very important because it's the main place where light enters and exits the diamond.

02. Upper Portion

The Crown

The Crown is the top portion of the diamond between the Table and the Girdle. It contains several types of Facets consisting of bezels, stars and upper Girdle Facets that gather and disperse light to create brightness, fire and a scintillating pattern of light and dark. Like the Table, it's one of the most visible surfaces.

03. The Rim

The Girdle

The Girdle is the narrow rim around the widest edge of the diamond. It can be either rough, polished or faceted. The Girdle is where the Crown and Pavillion meet.

04. Depth & Reflection

The Pavilion

The Pavilion is located at the bottom of the diamond. It determines light reflection and a quality cuts allow for the max light, since the more light that can pass through the diamond, the more brilliance it will have.

05. The Base Apex

The Culet

The Culet is a facet located at the apex, bottom of the diamond's Pavilion and is intended to prevent chipping and abrasion to the point. The Culet needs to be small enough to allow for proper light refraction. Its size can affect the face-up appearance as you can commonly see the Culet through the Table.
